Winter Seatrout Zonker

by Thomas Samuelsen

In the past many used handmade lures for seatrout fishing in Denmark. One particular, very efficient one, got into my mind for some days ago when I saw rabbit skin colored as the famous Funen coast wobbler. It was invented by seatrout fishers along the coat of Funen and it soon shew that it was the right medicine for seatrout in the winter and early spring, when the water temperature was still cold.

The colors were red on the top and half down the side and yellow of rest of the side to the underneath. The wobbler was made of wood and after a while it got manufactured, it was available in the tackle shops soon. It was made in different lengths from 6-7 cm up to 15-18 cm. So why not create a fly with the same colors and with much more movement than a piece of wood? Think of the Mickey Finn for instance, which has great popularity as a provocation fly worldwide.

Used materials:

  • Hook: Owner 53786, size 4. It has good resistance of saltwater and a wide gape.
  • Thread: Uni Ultra 7/0 Red
  • Eyes: Chain eyes copper
  • Body: Mylar tube, small, pearl orange
  • Wing: Rabbit strips 3 mm Fluorescent yellow and hot orange tips

Tying step-by-step:

Step 1: Tie up 15 mm in the end of the mylar tube and fasten it over the hook point. Leave 15 mm of mylar tube ahead of the hook eye. Add some superglue on the thread. The superglue drops should look like a pearl necklace. The superglue secures the windings and gives a strong and durable fly without any knots and whipfinishes, a fast and easy way to secure windings. Just be aware of some superglues dry up dull. Find you own favorite superglue. Wind and secure the mylar tube.

Step 2: When the superglue is still wet, place and fasten a 4-5 cm long rabbit strip. Notice to place the strip, so the natural direction of the hair point backwards. Leave 8-9 mm as tail. Ad superglue to the thread again and secure the rabbit strip.

Step 3: Fasten the thread 5 mm from the eye of the hook and rip up the mylar tube and bend backward the “fibers”, so it makes a fake hackle. Fasten the eyes so the rabbit strip can be fastened in front of them.

Step 4: Fasten the strip in front of the eyes and eventually cut off too much of the rabbit skin with a razor sharp knife. Fasten the rabbit strip behind the eyes and secure with superglue on both windings. Brush gently the hairs backwards and you are done.

Now it’s just to go to your own hotspot and find some seatrout!

Tight lines! Thomas
