Vejle and Skjern å 2010

By Jesper Havshoi - Fish & Outdoor - Fredericia, Denmark

Hello everyone! The 2010 season in Vejle å has been very tough. The number of seatrout that went up the river this season, was a lot lower than normal. If it is the long and cold winter we have had this year, which had delayed the fish going up, or maybe it’s due to a lot fish died during last winter… We don´t know at the moment.

The season started okay for me. I got a nice silver fish in the end of June on 4,5 kilo. After this my season has just been very hard work, only 4 fish landed during all season. And I have been fishing the river 60 times during the season…

4,5 Kilo brutal power from the river.

The best one for me this season.

At the end of September I stopped fishing the river, I simply had enough for this season. So for the rest of the year I am fishing the coastline again. All in all 663 seatrout were caught during the season 2010. Remarkably the 2009 season produced over 1100 seatrout…

It was mostly the fish between 3 and 5 kilo missing this year. Let’s hope next year will be better again.

Skjern Å

Skjern Å has just been fantastic again. The season started the 1st of April and more than 2000 fishermen were along the banks of Skjern å the first day of the season. Not too many salmon were caught these first days of the season, but the temperature was also just around 0-5 degrees.

As soon as the temperature started to rise, so did the catches of Salmon. Lots of salmon were landed and in the beginning of June the limit of 175 salmon larger than 75 cm, was reached. After this it was only allowed to take salmon under 75 cm home and here again the limit was 175 salmon. My friend Kasper landed a big salmon the 3rd of June: 126 cm and 17, 7 kilo. Really nice and silver fish.

Monster Atlantic for Kasper!

Kasper with a incredibly nice Atlantic.

During the summer lots of salmon came up the river and lots of salmon were caught and put back in the river again. Throughout the summer you could see large numbers of salmon waiting to go up the river, where the river meets the fjord. Local people said they have had never seen so many salmon waiting to go up the river as this year.

All in all this season along Skjern å has been the best for many years. 1149 Salmon were caught during the season (2009 season produced 843 salmon). 350 Salmon was taken home by fishermen and the rest was put back safely. These numbers really show that all the hard work that has been done for the last 20 years is paying off. So already Skjern å is a lot better than the famous Mörrum river in Sweden.

Morten also got in a nice Atlantic.

So maybe you should try out Skjern å next time you go to Denmark…
