Denmark Report - April 2010By Jesper Havshøi – Fish and Outdoor - Fredericia Hallo everyone. Now it is time to make a status about the fishing in April. The coastline fishing has been with a lot of ups and downs. In the beginning of April the fishing was very good in most of the places around here, except for Lillebaelt, here the fishing didn´t get okay until the end of the month. Vejle fjord was fishing very nice; a lot of fish were caught. But most of the fish was very slim, very likely due to the long and cold winter we had here in Denmark this year. But there were also caught some very nice fish in top condition.
Rough winter. There was a big completion in the middle of April in Vejle fjord, 600 fishermen took part in the competition and only 27 seatrout were caught. The biggest was only 2,1 kilo. This result was very disappointing. But some days the fjord is fishing well and other days the fjord is fishing extremely bad. At the end of April the fishing was okay again, lots of small fish were caught but also quite a few around 2-3 kilo. Kolding Fjord was fishing very nice in April. Lots of fish were caught in the inner part of the fjord in the beginning of the month, and throughout the whole month the fishing got better in all parts of the fjord. The area in the outer part of the fjord has been fishing extremely well some days and other days nothing at all has been caught.
Some slim, some in quite good condition. Lillebaelt started bad but ended nice. In the beginning of April nothing at all was caught here, but I guess it was because of the low water temperature. In the end of the month it all got better; a lot of fish up to 65 cm were caught, so now it is a really nice time to go here to try out the fishing. The Rivers Skjern å started the season with around 2000 fishermen along the banks on the premier day of the season. This is absolutely too many people at once along the river. But I think everybody just got the famous salmon fever (at least I have it). The opening day of the season around 45 salmon were caught, but not many were brought home. Most of the fish were in really poor condition. This is because of the cold winter here, the fish stayed longer in the river after the spawning this winter.
Skjern å started the season with around 2000 fishermen along the banks. Not too many new fresh salmon got up to the river this early, but some nice fish were caught. At the end of April 186 salmon were landed but only 56 salmon were brought home. The rest of the fish were put safely back into the river. Skjern å has a limit of how many salmon the fishermen are allowed to bring home for the season. A maximum of 1 salmon per fisherman and a total of 175 salmon above 75 cm and 175 salmon bellow 75 cm is allowed to be taken from this river. When the limit is reached, the salmon caught needs to be put back.
When the limit is reached, the salmon caught needs to be put back. By the way, I had the privilege to land a salmon on 90 cm caught by Jelle in the middle of April. The salmon was put back safely in the river after a short photo session. After he landed the salmon I thought Jelle was the happiest Dutch fishermen in the world. At least he looked like that.
I had the privilege to land a salmon on 90 cm. Varde å had an extreme month of fishing. The record for biggest salmon ever caught in the river was broken 3 times within 1 week. 18 kilo, 18,7 kilo and the last on 20,4 kilo. The size of these fish is simply amazing. So it is not only in Norway and Sweden the big salmon is caught. Also salmon on 14, 15, and 17 kilo were caught in Varde å this month. The total number of fish caught until now is not clear but 54 salmon were brought home, how many that were put back we cannot see until the end of the season.
Many fish will be put back. The Salmon has a limit of how many fishermen are allowed to bring home for Varde å. The number for this season is 130 salmon and also a maximum of 1 salmon for one fisherman. When the limit is reached the salmon caught needs to be put back in the river. This was my report for April and I will be back with more at the end of May or earlier if something special happens. See you out there. Tight lines for everyone.
