Crazy Danes in the Netherlands...door Jesper Havshoi After a perfect day with the seabass we decided to give the mullet a go with the fly rod. Once again we were told that it was mission impossible, but if you don´t try it out you will never know if it is possible. We located some mullets pretty quickly. But it was not easy to get close to them; the mullet can be extremely shy.
It was not easy to get close to them; the mullet can be extremely shy. After a while we found a new spot. Here it seemed like the mullet was a lot more active. The water level was high and the mullet was cruising along. This spot looked very promising now, maybe it was the right moment to get them to take the flies. Thomas put a new fly on the leader, and I tried to guide him into the right position. It was extremely exciting to guide him where to put the fly on the water. I could see the mullet cruising around the fly, but they didn´t take it. Unfortunately he didn´t get any strike. I spotted a new group of mullets and I decided to try to see if I could get them to take the fly. I put on a small green fly and gave it a go. The first time the fly landed perfectly in the middle of the group of mullets. The mullets started to act more aggressively around the fly but still they didn´t take it. I casted one more time and a few seconds later a mullet took the fly in a small turn. YES! Finally I got one on the fly! After a nice fight I landed a mullet on 47 cm, my first mullet on the fly ever.
YES! Finally I got one on the fly! Right after that the water level started to go down and within a few minutes all mullets were gone. But still this day was a great success. We learned a lot about the fly fishing for mullets. One of the things we learned: be patient!
